How to convert military time
From 13:00 to 23:59, subtract 12 from the hour and it is PM: 1700 is 17 − 12 = 5:00 PM. From 01:00 to 11:59 the hour stays the same and it is AM: 0730 is 7:30 AM. 00:00 to 00:59 is the 12 o’clock hour after midnight (00:30 = 12:30 AM), and 12:00 to 12:59 the one after noon (12:30 = 12:30 PM).
The other way: from 1:00 PM on, add 12 to the hour (7:15 PM = 19:15, or 1915), and 12 AM becomes 00. Military time is usually written without the colon and said as “nineteen fifteen”; a whole hour such as 1900 is “nineteen hundred”. Some schedules write the midnight at the end of a day as 2400.
Adding up hours in 24-hour time
The 24-hour clock makes a time card easy to add up: hours worked = out − in − unpaid break. 07:00 to 15:30 with a 30-minute lunch is 8:30 − 0:30 = 8:00. If the out time is smaller than the in time, the shift went past midnight: add 24 hours to it, so 22:00 to 06:00 is 22:00 to 30:00, 8 hours. The time card calculator does this for you, and the Punchwise app can show every time in 24-hour format (Settings → Time format).
Frequently asked questions
Is 12:00 PM noon or midnight?
12:00 PM is noon (12:00 or 1200 on the 24-hour clock) and 12:00 AM is midnight (00:00 or 0000). To avoid mix-ups on a schedule, write 12:00 noon or 12:00 midnight, or use the 24-hour time.
What time is 1500 in military time?
1500 is 3:00 PM: 15 − 12 = 3. In the same way 1800 is 6:00 PM and 2100 is 9:00 PM.
Is military time the same as 24-hour time?
Yes, it is the same clock; military time just leaves out the colon (1430 instead of 14:30). Both run from 00:00 (midnight) to 23:59.
